Good fit and material - terrible pockets
The fit and finish of the jacket is fine. The pockets are substandard at best. I owned a Bean field coat in the early 1980s and the difference in quality and utility with the current model is dramatic. There is no interior chest pocket, and of course, no game pouch pocket along the bottom of the jacket. The existing pockets along the waist are unprotected and loose (no snaps or buttons) so the likelihood of losing items in these pockets is very high. They are also shallow. The upper chest pocket is small with a low quality zipper; it is not suited for much more than a pack of gum or keys. Because I like the overall feel of the coat, and it is a good weight for spring or fall, I am going to have it taken to a tailor to add an interior pocket and secure the existing pockets. I will also have the tailor split and resew the back at the bottom for a more comfortable and useful fit. Bean could have made this an exceptional coat with a bit more attention to quality (more function to complement the appearance, but they fell short on this model. I am disappointed, but as stated, will fix it myself at additional cost. It has nothing to do with the original field coat, however, and I cannot recommend it as is. Please, LL Bean, focus on quality and utility, as was the case years ago.

Perfect Transitional Season Jacket
Purchased this jacket as a birthday gift for my husband. He absolutely loves it! It looks great, and in this very cool to cold spring we’re experiencing here in New England, it’s been the perfect transitional season jacket. Sturdy and very stylish; comfortable and functional, with great pockets. The body is lined in a cozy plaid flannel. So glad I ordered him the slightly unusual gray/green/blue color. He is 6 ft tall and athletic; l opted for Tall Large. He’s worn the jacket over flannel shirt, a casual twill shirt, a tee and heavy wool pullover, and a cashmere sweater and dress shirt (not all at once, of course!). It’s been a comfortable fit and looked great with everything he’s tried. Likewise, he’s worn it with jeans, cords, and chinos. Of course this jacket will take a break for summer, but it will be a wardrobe staple when we travel to the UK this autumn. Thank you for maintaining your excellent quality standards at a time when some other companies are not.

I’ve had LL Bean Field coats for decades. The only reason I buy new ones is the grief I get from my girl. They just get more comfortable as they age.

Quite good so far.
It seems good so far. It’s premature to rate something like this after having had it only a few weeks, although I have no reason to think it won’t last. It’s pretty heavy duty, warmer than the field coat (from another company) that it replaced.
