Great multi-use travel tote / backpack
LL Bean Stowaway Tote Pack works well for a day tote or backpack when traveling. We specifically liked that the LL Bean Stowaway Tote Pack does NOT have a sternum strap or a waist strap. For our use, those would not have been used and would only have been annoyingly dragging or been a pain to keep stored. We used as a secondary tote pack to supplement one person's camera bag and other person's sling bag purse. It carried water bottles, snacks, extra layers, collapsible hiking poles, guide books. We liked the options to carry as either a tote bag or a back pack -- in crowded places like subways and trains, we find a tote bag easier & seems to fit better and take less space than a backpack. On future trips we plan to use this tote pack as a personal item on planes.
We're mixed on the padding / stiffening in the tote pack: on the one hand, it does help the tote pack keep its shape, making it easier to pack and to retrieve items from; on the other hand, the padding / stiffening makes the tote / pack take up more space if you're packing it in a suitcase on a trip.
Pocket for backpack straps works as pocket for things you might want to keep out of main bag, like hiking poles.
One star taken away for flaws: 1) Padding in full-length pocket inside the bag has padding only on the back; to truly make this a laptop-protective pocket it needs some padding on the bottom. 2) Some sort of elastic keeper is needed on the back pack straps: when adjusted for us, there was enough strap hanging that when we needed to quickly switch from back pack to tote -- i.e. not enough time to store back pack straps into outside back pocket -- the excess strap dragged on the ground, causing a tripping hazard.

Great Design but could be so much better.
It could be constructed from a higher quality material, such as a thicker nylon fabric. Regarding the top zipper, it should be more heavy-duty, considering the stress it will endure while being used as a backpack. ( Stitching , Fabric / Zipper affected)
The LLBean iron-on logo somewhat diminishes the product's value.
Offering personalized monograms would enhance its appeal. Additionally, the handle could be improved by incorporating a magnetic feature for easier assembly; currently, it requires effort to snap it together and a bit of work to unsnap it. With a magnetic handle, you could simply align them and pull them apart effortlessly.

The stowaway back pack worked great during excursions from the ship on a recent cruise.
It easily carried my water bottle and there was plenty of room to stash my jacket as the day warmed up.

Best versatile day pack ever!
I found this pack very versatile and it definitely met multiple travel needs. It was great that it folded easily into my suitcase when not in use. The best feature was that it was waterproof.

Stowaway Tote Pack - nice pack, one major problem
For the most part, the tote pack (back pack) was what I was looking for - something light that I could use every day, has lots of pockets so I can find different items I need to carry around with me, and large enough to fit 2 pairs of glasses, along with other daily necessaries, and to add small purchases. One major problem. The ties on the zippers are much too short, and slippery, so you can only tie 1 knot which comes untied with every use of the zipper. They fall off completely. I've had to tie them back on, except for the one that fell off and got lost. They're useless. Would it cost that much to make them longer so you can tie a longer double know and/or use material that holds the knot better? You might as well eliminate them altogether if you won't fix them.

Great Backpack for traveling!
Took this backpack to Europe for a two week vacation and it was the perfect bag! Performed great as my personal item on flight and transitioned perfectly into a day pack for exploring the cities!!
