This great-looking traditional outerwear combines the rugged durability of waxed cotton and the warmth of down insulation. Tough British Millerain waxed cotton is water resistant and highly abrasion resistant.

Great Combo of Old and New Schools
Excellent warmth for weight. Not bulky and does well over layers. Good to around freezing temperatures by itself. Much better than the puffy down jackets that are so common these days.

Absolutely Perfect
This Down Sweater--"The British Millerain Co., Ltd." is the perfect fit, weight, warmth, comfort and appearance. Inside and outside pockets, zippered and buttoned, are ample. Although, the word "Sweater" is part of the garment's full title: "Bean's Upcountry Waxed Cotton Down Sweater," for me this is a jacket of immense character, warmth, and function. Had there been more than three colors to choose from, I am certain I would have purchased them all--that is how much I like wearing this jacket. If there are any remaining in stock, I highly and, without hesitation, recommend looking into to adding one or two to one's wardrobe.

Nice but ...
Really nice jacket but isn't fitted at all and kind of boxy. Tighter arm cuffs and the ability to tighten the waist would be nice given it's "boxiness"and does little to help with wind and drafts.

“Rugged Durability” Miisrepresented
I replaced this jacket that suffered water damage in a house fire with a new one in December 2023. By December 2025 the cuffs and sleeves were worn out and fraying. It is great to wear and very versatile and warm, but for the price it should last longer than 2 years. That being said, I bought a 3rd jacket. LL Bean has no business misrepresenting this as having “rugged durability.”

I love this jacket!!
I received this jacket at the end of November and I’ve been wearing it everyday since. It has been very impressively warm, with appropriate layering underneath, and I finally found its limit in nighttime, 6 degree airtemp, -7 feels like temp, weather. It was fine during the day with some warmth from the sun. Given how thin this jacket it, I’d say that is excellent performance.
The styling is timeless and the black color is classy. I love having a jacket that looks upscale and performs so wonderfully. I was apprehensive of how it’d perform at first, but all of them have been assured and I couldn’t be happier with how this jacket feels, looks, and performs.
I’m 5’10” with an athletic build (wide shoulders) and usually wear Large in everything, but medium fits me very well in this style with room for layers.
Great job LL Bean!
