Excellent choice for air travel
I travel domestically and I wanted a lightweight carry-on bag that will truly stay within the 22" x 14" x 9" size limit, which I anticipate is about to be more rigorously enforced by cash-strapped airlines using automated sizers to collect fees from passengers at the gate. Looking at luggage manufacturers' websites, I found that "carry-on" is a loosely applied description. So many of their bags are oversized by a few inches here or there, and it's up to the shopper to figure that out. I was pleased that LLBean has several options that don't exceed the limit. Also pleased that some of them are two-wheel bags. I'm not a fan of spinners.
Trying to decide between this bag or the Adventure Rolling Duffle, a major persuasion point for me was that this bag has grab handles almost everywhere. Top, both sides, top and bottom of the front panel. I'm a leftie, and I appreciate that LLBean understands that handles on both sides matter to us! This bag weighs a pound more than the duffle, but the handles make it so much easier for me to hoist overhead.
Both bags fit within the 22 x 14 x 9 limit, but the sturdy Approach bag's structure makes it more compact overall. It has less tolerance for being overstuffed, and its 8.5" depth allows for the soft front to bulge and still not be over the limit. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I think that's going to matter. And maybe the paranoia stems from this being the third time I've had to buy new luggage over the years because of shrinking airline allowances. I also owned a bag that disintegrated in transit, so I like the exterior tie-down straps that take pressure off the zipper. The Approach is reassuringly robust for when it has to be gate-checked (for free because of limited overhead storage, not because of size). This bag is great for air travel.
I have mixed feelings about clamshells. Their footprint is bigger for packing, and they fit awkwardly in hotel luggage racks. But since my trips require taking sports uniforms as well as regular clothes, the clamshell works very well for keeping them separate. It also holds the contents more firmly in place. As for the amount it contains - functionally the same as the duffle. Like the duffle, it has a light colored lining so I can see my stuff.
A couple of critiques: the adjustable exterior tie-down straps cinch on the zipper side to protect it, but if they would cinch on both sides they would serve to compress the bag as well, a plus if it were overstuffed. And, I really like green luggage. It's less common and therefore easier to spot than black, but still not garish. Unless of course, for no apparent reason, it has a hideous neon orange zipper. Why, oh why? So I ordered the blue.

I love this suitcase
Purchased in 2025 and have used it several times for both domestic and overseas travel. It is perfect for my needs, light, well made, roomy, the teal color is easy to spot on the luggage carousel. I would also like to say that I would buy an under-seat version (approx 14 x 14 x 9") in a heartbeat, esp. in the teal color to match the larger one I have. Please make this is a smaller size for 1-2 day trips & as the personal carry-on item. Thanks!

I love its interior features--the zipper compartments and its size is perfect. I wish only one thing were different. I wish the wheels weren't fixed so that I could turn it sideways when threading my way through the aircraft in the economy section!

Exactly What I Wanted
This is a sturdy bag with as much room inside as the size allows. More room than other bags of a similar size I have used. Its two wheels work well; I wanted two because they tend to hold up better than four-wheel types.
This bag has LL Bean-worthy zippers, lots of handles, sturdy snaps, and, important to me, stands up well. Just back from a trip, and it did not tip over once (or even threaten to).
Unlike MANY bags that say they are 22" x 14" x 9", this one actually IS.
100% pleased.

I dont know who decided to label this as a Medium , it is a carry on and should be labeled as such. It should be labeled small carry on. And the Large is just a medium.

Attractive, durable, super great carry on!!
We bought 2 of these in 2024 for a 2 year international trip. We used them a lot. They hold so much stuff, always fit in the bins, and barely look used today. I highly recommend these bags!!
