Many Useful compartments; Durability not great
We bought this backpack 2 years ago for middle school. The design is great - lots of large useful compartments, easy to get books in an out, a strap to hold your water bottle, phone pocket. They did not have lockers so this bag was carrying 30+ lbs everyday. After only a year the straps were separating from the backpack. She made it through the rest of the year with it, but could not use it again. We ended up buying another one this year for high school. Why? No lockers in high school either. Even though the durability is NOT where it should be, we could not find a better bag than this. If your student is carrying a normal amount of weight, I'm sure this bag would last a long time. If they are carrying half their body weight in it, expect it to only last a few years. If only the straps were more padded and reinforced - it would be the perfect large backpack!

Very disappointing
I’ve been buying only L.L. Bean backpacks for over 3 decades for five children (and my husband as well as for myself). We have always loved them that is, until recently.
I bought a book bag for my son who was in eighth grade last year. Of course it was another L.L. Bean and it was an upgrade to a larger bag. (I believe it was a 44L it was longer than the current ones that are available.) It was a brand new backpack with mesh water pockets on sides and laptop holder built into the book bag. He loved that backpack. It was the perfect backpack for an older student except the mesh pockets tore up not long after he started using it. We had never seen that happen with any of the book bags from L.L. Bean. I took it back in the store as he wanted another one of those exact backpacks. Unfortunately, she told us that there were none anywhere and she couldn’t tell if they would come back. He was very disappointed, but we talked him into getting this one as it was the biggest they sold. The store had none in stock so we ordered it to be delivered to our home. The side pockets on this backpack are so small. You can’t even fit a standard size water bottle in there. Very disappointing. It’s really nonfunctional for middle school or high school or who carries a water bottle every day. I have only ever bought L.L. Bean backpacks and I’m not sure what to do at this point as school starts in a few days. I wish they would bring back the one that he bought last year. It was a much nicer backpack with plenty of room, I can’t imagine why they stopped carrying it. He wants his old backpack back that we returned. He said he would continue to use it with the busted up side pockets because it was a better backpack. Unfortunately that’s not an option. L.L. Bean, you have got to do something to fix these mistakes with your backpacks. There are many families out there like mine who have only bought your backpacks for many years because of the quality. Please fix these issues and bring back the other backpack that you discontinued last year. I am not sure what we will do with school starting next week. I see they have released a larger virgin of the deluxe original backpack, but they are not in stores here and I don’t know that I have enough time to get one here before school starts.

Long Lasting, Durable, LOTS OF ROOM
This is the best as an all in 1. I own other products but this is my NUMBER 1. I’ve had this exact model for 6 years now, going from freshman year of high school to now sophomore year of college. I’m writing this review because it literally still feels brand new. I swear on my life this thing has survived it ALL. I’ve thrown it on the ground in frustration, it’s been on dirty bathroom and airport floors, I’ve stuffed it to the brim when I moved, I use it for sleepovers, the gym and traveling ALL THE TIME, I’ve gotten stuck in pouring rain and there was not ANY drops of water on the inside. I am very rough with my hands (which tend to break things) and nothing has ever been damaged or broken or soaked with this brand. This baby has NOT failed me. This thing can literally fit a family of silverback gorillas, and I bet it’s just as strong as them too because it is the DEFINITION of indestructible for me. I’m so serious when I say I haven’t bought a backpack from another brand ever since. I’m serious, when I get rich I’m going to buy every single product from this brand. Call me a fangirl but I love you L.L Bean ❤️
