Great features, well made, hot in Texas summer
This shirt is well made, fits well, has convenient pockets and other features, and feels sturdy. It would be great in cooler climates, or in the wind. I bought it for sun protection, and wore it hiking in the summer, in the Ozarks in Arkansas, in Big Bend, and birding on the Texas coast. It was very hot, didn’t seem to breathe as I hoped it would. I sweated through it, and had to take it off and rely on sunscreen. I will try it again this winter, when, here in Texas, the temperatures again sink below 85 degrees.

Forced to buy Men's for the zipper chest pocket
These Tropicwear shirts are my ESSENTIAL travel and hiking shirts because of the Zipper chest pocket PLUS the two top-open velcro chest pockets. Unfortunately, Bean eliminated the zipper chest pocket from all the Women's Tropicwear shirts, so I was forced to try these Men's shirts for the functionality and fabric that are essential for my travels. The men receive more functionality, and even more fabric, for the same cost as the Women's shirts. Hmmm...
These Men's Tropicwear shirts are an acceptable substitute, although the sleeves and the shirt length are about 2" too long. Therefore, I have to belt the shirt with a sash or tuck it in. As for the long sleeve length, the extra length enables you to pull it over your hands and not touch door knobs, and you can roll it up.
I normally wear a Women's Reg. Small in the longsleeve shirt. I had to make do with the Men's Reg. Small. Unfortunately, the Men's model does not have the smart look of the Women's Tropicwear model that Bean eliminated about 3-5 years ago, which had a straight hem at the bottom and a very nice fitted shape. It could be worn untucked without a belt, and it never looked sloppy. It provided functionality with a very smart look. Unfortunately Bean destroyed that product, first replacing it with "loose fitting" women's shirts with a curved hem that looked very baggy, and then finally eliminating the zipper chest pocket for women.
For a few years Bean offered a Women's Fishing Tropicwear shirt with 2 zipper chest pockets, although no velcro drop-in chest pockets. These fishing shirts were baggier than the original Women's shirt, but I purchsed 2 and tolerated them because the chest zipper pockets are the most important travel feature. Alas, Bean finally eliminated this model as well, so now there are 0 Women's models with chest zipper pockets.
On some recent women's Tropicwear shirts, they put a very small zipper pocket on the back-side seam, at the bottom of the shirt, strategically placed so that you could not see it when you were opening it since it was located on your hip, and it was not usable at all if you had a waistpack or backpack with a hip strap. (Brilliant design -- by somebody who knew nothing about how the customer's used the Women's clothing.)
Over the years I have written many reviews praising the original Women's Tropicwear shirts, of which I own many, and reviews of concern when they changed the design. Those reviews are now apparently too old and do not appear any longer.
I purchased 3 colors of this Men's model shirt, and they are all lovely. However, I wish that LLBean would not target me with "customized" email ads for Men's shirts!
NO, I did not WANT to resort to wearing a man's shirt, but I was forced to in order to get the functionality that is essential for my travel and hiking.
Please, send me ads when you bring back the Women's Tropicwear shirts with both the zippered chest pocket (at a minimum) and hopefully also the chest drop-in velcro-closure pockets.
