The pack that started it all back in 1982. Our very first pack is as tough as ever--built to the highest standards with strong stitching & weatherproof fabrics to stand up to active kids.
It all began with a simple request. A student wrote us a letter asking if L.L.Bean could create an all-purpose bag to carry books & more. More than four decades later, our now-legendary Original pack is still going strong. Built to outlast the school year (and beyond), this rugged school pack has always had their back.
- Made of rugged, weatherproof nylon.
- Spot clean.
- Padded back panel for comfortable carrying.
- Padded, reinforced shoulder straps are easy to adjust.
- Water bottle pocket keeps hydration right at hand.
- Extra-tough zippers for years of use.
- Front pockets feature a key clip, an organizer panel and a place for lunch money or small treasures.
- Large main compartment holds a lunch box, books, worksheets, art projects and more.
- Easily folds down for stowing in a larger pack or duffle.
- Reflective trim on front and straps for extra visibility.

Really Disappointed
I was so happy to buy my daughter an LLBean backpack because I had one growing up and remember it being so functional and durable. While the backpack is great I am more than disappointed with the poor excuse for a water bottle holder. It is so tiny that my daughter has now had two Owalla water bottles fall out of her backpack and smash on the ground. I have spent more on water bottles this year than I have on the backpack. My mother came up with a solution to sew an elastic to the backpack that can hold the water bottle so it does not tip out. Fingers crossed the elastic does not rip the backpack.

Only backpack I’ll buy
These are the only backpacks I used from elementary school through grad school many years ago! Now I buy them for my son. His first one held up perfectly through his tough boy pre-school days. Decided go up to the Jr & get a fresh one for Kindergarten. Old one is perfect for a carry on plane bag or car trip, while the new one is used for school.
