Rated 5 out of 5 by ArcticAuroraExplorer from Put the Baxter to the extreme test. I just returned from Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, where I put this parka to the extreme test for 5 nights in a row, with temperatures as low as -33 Fahrenheit and a -51 windchill. I was out in the wilderness doing "night sky" photography for 3 to 5 hours per night, so not moving around a whole lot. Of course, you need to wear the proper layers underneath. Also, at those temps, you'll need a balaclava and a neoprene face mask. No need to buy a $900. Canada Goose Parka. I'm very happy with the Baxter State Parka, but if I was re-designing it, the large scoop pockets would be angled for easier access, instead of horizontal. Great value!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Tracker11 from Don't be fooled Am 6 ft. tall, looking for hardcore down parka for many Alaskan winter activities (replacement for Gortex down parka of many years). What was received was flat pancake with minimal loft and no down throughout parka. Upper chest pockets are difficult to access, lower pockets are "too low" for hands to rest in comfortably (ordered tall). The loft is what keeps you warm with down and this was lacking throughout! Extremely disappointed! Sleeves are flat, absolute minimum insulation there. Maybe ok for dash from house to car but NOT for all day outdoor winter activities below zero where your life depends on proper gear!

Rated 2 out of 5 by Nickster12 from Not Warm Enough I have had earlier versions of Bean's "warmest" jacket, and this one is clearly lacking. The old jackets were packed with down; this one has very little down--and what little down there is, is sewn through; no double box design, no overlap. The text says it is rated to 45 degrees below zero. I live in South Dakota, where we have very harsh winters and extreme wind, and I would rate this to about 20 degrees above zero. I think anyone using this jacket in -45 degrees would probably die within fifteen minutes. On top of this, the hood does not wrap around the face. Very strange. If I had been able to find my receipt, I would have sent it back.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Kilsdonk from Super Cheap Zipper I bought this for my 14 year old son. The coat itself is fine and he liked it, very warm and comfortable. BUT, the zipper broke on the sixth wearing! He sat down with the coat zipped up and six teeth just broke off. No teen boy type abuse, I was there and saw it happen. Really? The zipper is barely heavier than those on the back of my dresses! For $250, LL Bean could really spring for a heavy duty zipper :(. Now that it is single digits here, I'm kind of stuck...can't send it back and wait for another or send it out for repair as he'll have nothing to wear. Who can afford multiple coats for someone growing so fast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by 10SnBikingNut from Great coat! I am always a bit skeptical of claims made by companies about how well their products perform in adverse conditions like cold weather. In my part of the country (northern Wisconsin) it is cold - really cold - most of the winter. I finally decided to buy a coat that I hoped would make it more tolerable. This coat did the trick. It is well constructed and has lots of nifty features, like a hood that has two points of removal - the entire hood and the front part (the furry strip). It also locks in nicely to the coat so it does not flop around when not in use. It is warm - really warm. I still hate winter, but it is more tolerable now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by NutmegDogWalker from The Big Coat with Big Warmth! Having owned the Penobscot and Rugged Ridge parkas I finally graduated to the Baxter State Parka and love the warmth, water repelling and super-comfortable fit. Many pockets and snaps, but would have preferred velcro flaps, but the snaps remind me of the Penobscot (Rugged Ridge has great velcro flaps though), but the Baxter has the warmth I needed and Renard at the Flagship Store fitted me over the phone for a perfect fit after going over my exact base layers and chest size. Kudos LLBean finding the color and size I needed at your Flagship Store when my color sold out online and what a staff! LLBean is built to please and to last!

Rated 3 out of 5 by Runamuck from Parka is warm, comfortable; hood needs a re-design A nice warm parka but it is inferior to prior years' Baxter State Parkas, There is less fill than the parkas of yesteryear. The hood, itself, needs to be re-designed for proper fit and functionality, It is not very comfortable. A suggestion: eliminate the barrel-type cord adjustments, replace them with a simple tie cord, making for a tighter fit of the hood. The neck enclosure needs improvement also. There is only one set of snaps. Another set, a few inches away, would make for a tighter fit if needed. Better yet, forget about the snaps and use two longer velcro strips on the neck enclosure, making it much more versatile - better fitting and more functional.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Nance from Best coat I have ever purchased. My husband and I each purchased one of these coats for a ski trip to Traverse City, Mich.. We didn’t even have to zip them all the way they kept us so warm. The fit is perfect, the zippers work very well, the Velcro at the wrists and hood is superior to elastic because it won’t stretch out and you can make them as snug or as loose as you want. The drawstrings at the hood, waist and bottom keep out the drafts effectively and the fit is comfortable. We were so impressed the product we bought three more for our granddaughters. Definitely would recommend purchasing them if you want a warm, well functioning coat.
