    Product Details

An L.L.Bean exclusive for three decades and counting, our classic river driver's shirt has an innovative duofold construction that effectively traps and holds warmth.
    Size & Fit
    • Roomy, nonbinding fit, cut long to stay tucked in.
    • Traditional Fit: Relaxed through the chest, sleeve and waist.
    Why We Love It
We named this shirt after the Northern Maine log drivers who made their living in tough conditions – because we designed it to work just as hard. Exclusively knit for us in Nova Scotia, our legendary two-layer Henley features a chill-stopping dual-layer construction – so cold and wet stay out and warmth stays in. We love how it's tough on the outside, and soft on the inside.
    Fabric & Care
    • Outer layer is 50% cotton/40% merino wool/10% nylon.
    • Inside layer is made of soft, absorbent cotton.
    • As a duofold construction (the cotton and wool are knitted together), it will shrink in the dryer.
    • Woven just for us in Canada by Stanfield’s, a 160-year-old family company.
    • Machine wash, dry flat.
    Additional Features
    • Thermal construction traps air between the layers to retain warmth and helps layers hold shape.
    • Durable, quick drying wool blend outer layer keeps cold at bay.
    • Traditional two-button placket.
    • Rib-knit cuffs with Lycra® elastane.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Slippery Slope StevM January 23, 2013 I am a long time customer of LL Bean products and have always been satisfied; until now. I just received this River Driver shirt and although it is very nice in it's own regard,it falls short of the same model shirts that I had purchased a few years ago. The earlier model shirts were substantially thicker and heavier (I weighed both). If you held one in each hand it was easy to tell. I guess this is the way things are going everywhere, I just didn't expect it from LL Bean. Nice shirt, but not as nice as it used to be. It's going back on principle. To LL Bean: Please don't go down this road with your products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Should be called The River Scratcher Shirt This shirt is uncomfortable and quiet itchy. It is cut to fit a slim individual. I workout and the sleeves are tight around the arms and the shirt is small through out the chest. The cotton liner is quiet thin, and you can feel the itch of the wool. The shirt also needs to be hanged dry. You cannot place it in the dryer. After washing, pieces of the shirt come off and wear away. The quality of the shirt does not equal the price. Low value for your money.I have seen these reduced in price at the LL Bean stores. Maybe returns? I exchange it for a 100% cotton waffle henly. This shirt is cut to fit a true XXL man, and it is soft as well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Shrank in length Wife followed washing and drying instructions but after 5 or 6 washings I noticed it was getting shorter. Now ( a few years later) it only gets worn when it is the last one in the closet. It has shrunk up enough in length that it is uncomfortable and impossible to keep tucked in. Also, the cuff on the left sleeve has a twist in it and will not lay flat - basically just a cosmetic appearance problem - not a big deal. I should have returned it but life keeps one busy and a short shirt has not been at the top of my problem list. If you want an excellent shirt - try the sun washed canvas (I have a number of those and will be ordering more shortly).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Now a Rag I confess that I only write negative reviews. If I like a product, my lack of comment is a compliment. This product deserves comment. I have bought dozens of river drivers from Bean over about 30 or 35 years. They used to last far far longer and were much heavier. I have about 20. The quality has deteriorated in several stages over the years. Now after about 5 washings, there are several holes in the body and the sleeve ends are frayed. Oh, and the price is far out of line with the low quality now too. I think I am finished with Bean. It would also be nice if the photo upload worked in Chrome. Only 50% of surfers use it though!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Made The Way It Use To Be I bought 2 River Driver shirts for my son and my husband for Christmas. They both loved them at first, until I washed them and they shrunk. My son is in the military and he won't be able to lay it flat to dry. We use to love these shirts- my husband had a few over the years, but we noticed the quality has gone down and the price has gone up. Too bad, it is a nice looking shirt out of the package. Sadly, I won't be buying these anymore, just not worth the price. I hope LLBean will go back to the original "River Driver" fabric- if they see enough customers complaining about the quality.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from itchy Received my first river driver's shirt in 1981 as a gift - still wearing it (pajama top at this point!) for its warmth and softness. Since it's not really ready for prime time anymore (sleeves shredding after 30+ years - go figure ;-), decided to get another one. Loden green is a beautiful color, and it's the same Bean quality - nice thick shirt. Just has an itchiness now that I don't recall. Maybe that will dissipate over time (hope so). I machine washed and damp-dried, then hung to finish drying - worked for me. (Usually wear a women's size small, bought the men's small because I don't see it in women's sizes, so it's fine with me if it does end up shrinking some.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super shirt! This is a fantastic shirt. I purchased a men's small since llbean doesn't have the women's style anymore and I am 6' tall and need the arm length. I have been wearing it all the time, through single digit temps or just hanging around the house. It provides a good layer of warmth all by itself. Because a layer is wool, if you throw it in the dryer it will shrink, so try to lay it will be happy you did. Having said all that, it does fit better for a man's frame and not a woman's. I do wish llbean would seriously consider bringing back the woman's style (and maybe tall sizes). I would buy every color in a heartbeat. It's that great a shirt!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing shirt - two suggestions… If you’ll be out in cold weather for any real length of time, this shirt is a vital layer. I’ve owned a few of these over a long, long span of years (they’re durable). My two suggestions are: 1) Make this shirt for women (they used to, I’m pretty sure). I’d like to give this shirt as a gift, but in a women’s cut. 2) Make it in a crew neck (they used to, I’m wearing mine right this minute). This may sound weird, but I can’t wear Henley shirts - the placket and buttons irritate my chest (to a degree where it actually feels sore - I did say it may sound weird). I will make this crew version last until hopefully they make it in Crew again.
