Rated 3 out of 5 by SatisfiedinSC from 2 out of 3 If you rate an item of apparel by fit, function and fabric, these shorts hit 2 out of 3. The fit is on target and as described. Functionally, the pockets are roomy, flaps are functional and secure. An iPhone 10 in a case fits securely in the right leg pocket. The fabric is the drawback. It reminds me of the coated canvas bag I used on my paper route in the early 70's. Don't wear these without washing them 8 or 10 times. Seriously. LLBean, talk to your merchandise manager about adding an enzyme or industrial strength wash to the finish for these shorts. Then they'll be a 5-star product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by GoldenLion from Nice shorts, but not superb I like 'em. Some specifics: • some reviews cited stiffness of fabric; nope. I find 'em quite reasonable. • some reviews cited large pockets; not at all. I think the main pockets are not big enough and they suffer from fairly thin fabric construction. Worn out pockets have shortened the life of too many pairs of pants. • they're not as "tough" as the old "LLBean Katahdin Iron Works" products. And nowhere near as tough and durable as shorts from that brand featuring "plumbers butt" advertisements. • but gee, the price was right, especially on sale and more so on the two-a-day markdown. A good value at that price. I bought two!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Beyondlandscape from Nice.... I purchased these pants a week ago. I was wearing my Riverton pants camping in a sweltering 50 degrees this past May in the hills of western Massachusetts. The heat was almost unbearable. After my camping adventure I immediately returned to LLbean.com and ordered these shorts. They came post haste and were similar to the pants, however lacked the fabric below the knee. I must praise this article of clothing for its sturdy construction and appealing color. The stitching is exquisite and adds an ascetic dynamic similar to other pants I enjoy. The fabric is at the same time thick breathable and soft. I can see these shorts being like a finely crafted fishing story. They get better with age…

Rated 3 out of 5 by jimbogregs from Nicely made but.... They're a well made short but there are not enough belt loops. There is one at the back and one on either side which means your belts rides up over the fabric of the short, needs two more to stop that happening, apart from that, no complaints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Soapman47 from Good Sturdy Shorts Bought Riverton Shorts and Topical Weight Cargo shorts at same time. The Riverton Cotton 60% / Nylon 40% makes them stiffer and more rugged feeling, than 100% cotton cargos. Riverton 36 waist is a bit loose, while the cargo 36" with elastic band waist is a little sung. Like them both. Note the inseam length is different between the two.

Rated 3 out of 5 by LoyalBeanBuyer from Good color My husband has trouble getting things out of his pockets when sitting. He says the pocket openings are too high. He'd also like more belt loops. All of this may be because he is getting thicker in the middle, but he says his other LLBean shorts do not have these problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DurabilityEnthusiast from Awesome Shorts! These are my favorite shorts around by far. They run a little larger than most company's waist sizes, but I have found that overall L.L. Bean's fits are this way and adjust my order accordingly. These suckers are tough and quick drying. Comfortable, wear well, and vary durable.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Postes from Really Wasn't Impressed I expected a lot more for these shirts are listed under the "Active Clothing" section. The shorts feel very rugged and stiff, and as others mentioned the legs are much wider than traditional shorts. This is probably for better movement when doing activities, but for me personally I found them way too loose. In addition, the pockets felt more close to the crotch than normal side pockets too, they rested at the top my thighs which made them more inconvenient to use. I returned them after a day of use. They just weren't for me.
