Ultralight 850 Down Sweater
Our revolutionary 850 down sweater defies cold, wet weather – and comparison. We combined all the best outerwear technology – innovative DownTek fill, 850-fill-power and a Pertex Quantum nylon shell – for unbeatable performance.
Size & Fit
- Slightly Fitted.
- Best with lightweight layer.
Why We Love It
We start with premium 850 down, which provides more warmth for its weight, and then treat it with revolutionary DownTek that allows our jackets to do what many others can’t – keep you warm, even in wet conditions. Unlike ordinary down that soaks up moisture, ours absorbs 33% less moisture and dries 66% faster so it stays light, lofty and warm. On the outside, the game-changing Pertex Quantum nylon shell is tightly woven to resist the elements.
Fabric & Care
- 850-fill-power goose down is one of the highest on the market, delivering more warmth for weight.
- Premium Pertex Quantum nylon shell is tightly woven for wind and weather-resistance.
- Certified by the Responsible Down Standard, ensuring the humane treatment of animals.
- Machine wash and dry.
- Virtually weightless style easily packs away into its own pocket.
- Narrowly quilted channels of down provide a more streamlined appearance than most down jackets.
- Narrow baffles and minimal hardware further reduce overall weight.
- Two zippered hand pockets, a chest pocket with media port for plenty of storage.
- Adjustable drawcord at hem seals out cold blasts.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Paleoforams from Warm, but VERY poorly built. I am now on my second UL 850 sweater this month, and I will be returning it this week. Both returns were for the same reason: the jacket was ripped by its down fill and the fill now falls out. For the price of this jacket, I am extremely disappointed in its quality. Even worse, I have yet to wear this jacket during any activity. Both tears happened while wearing it casually in my car. I can't imagine how quickly this jacket would fall apart if I were to wear it skiing, climbing, or hiking. I will be returning for good and buying a Patagonia UL sweater instead, a product with proven durability. Would not recommend this jacket to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Maine2016 from Go To Jacket and Mid Layer I purchased my first sweater jacket two years ago, and liked it so much, that I purchased a second. I use it for around town wear on its own in temps from 20 to 40. It is very comfortable and not bulky for driving. My favorite use is wearing it under a shell skiing at Sugarloaf with wind chills down to minus 20. I use it with a base layer, a wind-shirt and the shell, and I am very warm. The zippered chest pocket sets it aside from some of the competition. I enjoy a roomy fit, and at 5' 8" 190 lbs, the extra large works well. I keep a L L Bean sweater jacket and a Gore-Tex shell in the back of my SUV year round ready for any conditions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by bioboy from Light, warm, repells wind and water Light as a feather. As warm as 200 level fleece. Quite water repellent in a light brief shower. Good windbreaker. Excellent packability with a pocket that is not too small to pack it into easily. Draw cord at waist. Neck collar will stand up but is still a bit loose. Side pockets provide ventilation when opened. Used in Yellowstone for 2.5 weeks and was in my daypack every day. Layers nicely under a rain shell. I questioned the zippers but they held up OK. Cuffs have elastic but not tight on my arms. Large was good for my 6' frame but if you are thin the medium might work for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by RJK1 from Sweater and Jacket Compared I have both the 850 sweater without hood and the 850 Jacket with hood. I'm 6' and 200 pounds and purchased the large in the jacket and the x-large in the sweater. I was surprised that the different sizes fit the same. I also thought the 850 stood for fill weight, however, the sweater has much less fill than the jacket. The sweater has been good down to the low 30's and I go with the jacket for the 20’s to zero. The Jacket is a bit too warm for me if the temps are in the 30’s. Both are good quality but the Jacket might be a bit nicer quality. I really enjoy both of them and they meet my needs well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ATHIKERRICK from Dependable Lightweight Backcountry Jacket I've used this jacket on 2 multi day Mt. Bike rides. Jacket is well made, very light, and packs extra small. Temps at night were high 30's to mid 40's. Perfect with a thin moisture transfer top. I pack about 15lbs of total gear including tarp, sleeping quilt, cook gear/food, rain jacket, and other items. I really appreciated the packability and how the jacket retained it's loft (thin but warm) after removing from the stuff sack. I'm planning to get another for around town use. The jacket is cut rather trim so you can't wear several layers unless your a small frame but an Xlg fit me perfect. I do wish that LL Bean would make sizes for "normal" people. Overall, a great outdoor jacket, Get One!

Rated 4 out of 5 by SheboyganFallsLLBeanFan from Light weight, warm, comfortable fit I received the Ultralight 850 Down Sweater for Christmas and now have purchased one for my husband. They'll be perfect for our European bike/barge trip next fall. We both picked the red color for visibility and the light weight down will provide warmth without taking up all the space in our suitcases. The Down Sweater actually stuffs into its own pocket! While the 850 down sweaters are expensive, they will serve us well on all our adventures. I generally wear a misses 12 and the woman's "large regular" fit me perfectly. The XL Tall fits my 6'4" husband and his 37" long arms.

Rated 1 out of 5 by AckMN from Disappointed! I wanted to love this coat but fabric started disintegrating within one year. I wouldn't recommend for anything other than very light use. It's quite expensive for one season of use and the quality certainly seems to fall short of the LLBean reputation - very disappointed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Lush from Nice concept but a difficult fit. I am a size medium or large in sweaters, jackets, etc., depending on the item. I ordered the LL Bean down sweater in a size large. Generally it was the right fit, with one major exception. The garment was way too tight in the armpits, to the point of discomfort and potentially restricting easy movement. I found this odd since the sleeve length was fine as was the fit most everywhere else. There is nothing unusual about my build; pretty average. This problem existed even when I wore only a thin t-shirt underneath. I returned the item and will look for something similar in another brand.
