Why We Love It
We start with premium 850 down, which provides more warmth for its weight, and then treat it with revolutionary DownTek that allows our jackets to do what many others can’t – keep you warm, even in wet conditions. Unlike ordinary down that soaks up moisture, ours absorbs 33% less moisture and dries 66% faster so it stays light, lofty and warm. On the outside, the game-changing Pertex Quantum nylon shell is tightly woven for exceptional durability.
Fabric & Care
- 850-fill-power goose down is one of the highest on the market, delivering more warmth for weight.
- Pertex Quantum nylon shell is tightly woven for durability and weather-resistance.
- Certified by the Responsible Down Standard, ensuring the humane treatment of animals.
- Machine wash and dry.
- Virtually weightless style easily packs away into its own pocket.
- First-ever hooded option for extra warmth.
- Media storage with headphone ports.
- External zip handwarmer pockets.
- Elastic cuffs seal out icy gusts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by teacher2257 from Great jacket, if you have the right expectations I've had this coat for a year and like it a lot. It's extremely light-weight, water-resistant, warm, and looks great. Some reviewers say it doesn't keep them warm enough on extremely cold days. On such days, who wears just a coat? You wear a good sweater, maybe even thermal underwear. As long as you're prepared to wear a sweater on extra cold days, you'll be fine. That said, if I could only have one coat to wear in the winter, it probably wouldn't be this. It would be a waterproof parka with inter-changable zip-in liners. I'd use a down liner for super cold days, a fleece liner for mildly cold days, and no liner on normal fall & spring days.

Rated 1 out of 5 by midwestconsumer from Not the quality I normally receive with LL Bean I am not one to write reviews, but always read them. In this case, I felt I needed to leave feedback. This jacket lasted less than 1 season due to loss of feathers, which led to small holes, including one noticeable hole and another that developed into a sizable tear. Feathers were routinely poking through the outer shell. Given that this was not a cheap jacket, and LL Bean typically stands for quality, we were disappointed. In fact, we chose this jacket over an alternative even though it was more expensive thinking it would pay off in quality. The concept is great, but it isn’t durable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by goose from Nice jacket, fit is strange Very nice jacket with nice features. The hood could be bit more encompassing, that is, could cover more of your face. Nice mesh pocket and stow pocket on the inside of the jacket. I like the water repellent down and the Pertex feels great. At 167 lbs. and 6'2" I got the Large Tall. The sleeves were good and long but it seems like I could have gotten two arms in each of the sleeves, and chest and torso is probably about 50" around. I can't imagine enough layers to compensate for that much extra room! If it was a non-insulated shell, you might want room for under layers, but this is "850 down", why so much extra room?

Rated 3 out of 5 by MHOLDER from Not Very Warm, Wind Cuts Right Through I wanted to love this jacket. It is very lightweight, and wonderfully packable. The hood does a good job. The only problem is that it isn't very warm. I wore it on a zoo trip (outside in the wind) on a sunny Minnesota winter day. It was 27F, which is VERY mild. Under the coat I wore a t-shirt, and also a long-sleeve t-shirt. And I wasn't warm enough. The breeze cut right through it. It's not a bad jacket overall. But for the amount of warmth it provided, I could spend 1/3 the price. I was with my sister whose $60 Landsend jacket kept her toasty and my hubby, whose $99 Eddie Bauer down coat was more than enough. I was the only cold one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Raunchmeyer from Sad day for a long time ll bean customer I got this jacket about 5-6 years ago and absolutely loved it. The pockets had a fleece type of soft fabric and the collar did too. My sleeve tore on my old one : item # 276547. So I decided to buy another with a hood. NOT THE SAME. LESS FILL. NOT AS WARM. NO MORE POCKET FLEECE. I’d absolutely love to know how much less fill there is in this jacket. Same down-tech. Same 850 fill. Simply less fill. I’ve been buying from bean for about 40 years. The quality has gone down the tubes as revenue and profit have become more of a focus. It’s crystal clear it’s happened. Sadly. I’m returning the jacket and I’ll look elsewhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Brianboy from Alaska? Please, give me a real challenge. I bought this light weight, comfortable, and yet surprisingly warm jacket for my recent move to Alaska. The mornings here are in the negatives and it feels like a beautiful warm day with my Ultralight 850 Down Jacket. High winds are a soft breeze with the hood up, what a plus. My first night in Alaska was spent in my car wearing this jacket along, with a down L.L Bean sleeping bag. No joke, I seriously was totally comfortable. Frost could be seen on all the windows and I found out it was -15 F*. I was blown away. I have always bought L.L. Bean and always will. Thank you L.L.Bean

Rated 4 out of 5 by Doctorbea from Ultra-light, but NOT All-weather This jacket is extraordinarily light weight, exceedingly comfortable, and made with great craftsmanship....but it doesn't protect from wind or rain. It's possible to feel the cold piercing right through the jacket, if you are not compensating with an underlying layer. Also, it is not very durable. I've torn open the surface of this jacket twice, while hiking through thicker brush in the deep woods. Thank goodness for the outstanding L.L. Bean warranty. This is an excellent item for a specific, known scenario, but it does hold its own in variable weather. Outside certain parameters, it's just mediocre.

Rated 1 out of 5 by MrMrsNoah from Drafty jacket After reading the description in the LL Bean catalogue, I believed that a 850 down-fill coat would be superior to a 500 or 650 down coat. I was sadly disappointed. The jacket should have been perfect for walking dogs in temperatures as frigid as -30c with windchill. Even after layering with a heavy fleece and a thick woolen toque, the jacket was just too drafty. Unfortunately, the hood coverage is loose and baggy. There are no features that allow you to tighten the hood and sleeves to keep out the cold, the wind and drafts. The hood itself is very shallow (not wide enough to cover your cheeks).
