Product Details

The Maine Hunting Shoe was "L.L." Bean's first product, introduced in 1912. Over the years, we've made lots of improvements, but hunters told us they missed the moccasin-like feel that our original boots had in the woods. So we brought it back.

Why We Love Them

As one customer told us, “These boots fit like they have over a 100 years of effort put into the design.”

Men's Maine Hunting Shoes, 12" is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 107.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from 12" Maine Hunting Boot As good as I hoped. I wear a men's 10D, ordered size 9 and they fit perfectly even with a pair of thick wool socks. What I mean by "perfect" is that with the socks on, there was about a good 1/2-3/4" of breathing/wiggle room. With regular socks even more wiggle room but they did NOT feel big. The laces are enough to secure the boots on and no slippage felt while hiking through valleys and plains with tall brush, loose dirt and jagged rocks. For warmth, it's really in the socks you get. I was in 40 degree weather with only merino wool socks (no liners) and they felt just fine. I'm very pleased with my purchase :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remarkable for over 26 years My first pair of these hunting shoes was purchased as I was leaving for college in 1987, and the rubber bottoms finally had to be retired yesterday. I've never owned anything so reliable and consistent. Mine didn't receive pampered treatment - they saw regular use hunting, fishing, ice fishing, with one cleaning and treatment of the uppers each year. They are simply a three-season go-to for me if it might be wet. Even in writing this I'm amazed as I think back to all the places I took these boots, or maybe that they took me. I'm buying my second pair this week, and I truly expect that it will be the last pair I'll ever need.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great service, great boot We all know about LL Bean's great service and it did not disappoint. The Maine Hunting Shoe is a classic and for the price, there is no better boot. However, I wish Bean's Signature line would deliver a Maine Hunting Shoe with better leather (for a higher price, of course). Waxed canvas is nice, but I'd prefer the boot to have Chromexel leather from Chicago's Horween Tannery. That would be well worth the price and would be a perfect product for the niche American heritage clothing market that the Signature Line markets to. That's just my two pennies...a great product that hopefully will be around for many years to come (and always Made in the USA).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No longer available in wide width? I came here to purchase another pair of Maine Hunting Shoes in the 12" height. These are apparently no longer available in a wide width. However, they are still offered in the 10" height. Aren't the uppers and lowers interchangeable? Aren't the boots still hand sewn in Maine? Why limit offerings to your customers when you already have the available parts and a manufacturing facility?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the wait I ordered these boots knowing they would be back ordered. I was told they would ship in June. They arrived around the end of March. I normally wear a 10 1/2- 11 in boots, for these I ordered 10 and they fit perfect. After wearing once all day( retightened laces once) they are perfect. I worked shaving cream into them the night they arrived to soften them up. Old baseball glove trick. Perfect boots! Ordered a pair for my wife.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far, so good I needed a pair of waterproof boots for the spring time. Snow thaw in MN brings mud and puddles and mud puddles, for that matter. So far these boots are working as expected. They are great for commuting, I can tuck my work pants in the boots and avoid splatter. Though not insulated, my feet stay warm in them - down to 10 degrees or so, so far. They are perfect for playing in the muck - I have a two year old, muck reigns supreme. They look good, and they make me look good. I'm a sucker for iconic American stuff. There is a reason these boots are iconic, they are endlessly practical. They are adventure shoes, and I look forward to the adventures we will go on together. From all I've read, they should stand the test of time. More on that later. So long from the frozen north.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 26 years, a testament to the quality. When I was sixteen years old, I asked my parents for a pair of these boots and they indulged my wish. Twenty-six years later, just yesterday, the stitching sadly gave way at the heel of one of the boots while the rest of the boot remains in great shape. Year after year, I've walked over plowed fields, through forests, sloughs and snow. The boots have always left me, at the end of the day, with warm dry (and happy) feet. There is no way to describe the value I've obtained over the nearly three decades of use. I'm hoping they can be repaired or that I'm in better financial shape next year so I can buy a replacement. It's a quality product that I highly recommend ... and have recommended to many of my friends. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 12" Maine Hunting Shoe- Great boot I finally took the plunge and bought myself a pair of the 12" Maine Hunting Shoe. I work outdoors and play outdoors in northwestern Ontario, Canada. I wanted a rain boot/ early season hunting boot other than my tall Muck Boots. The quality seems great and the boots are comfortable. Like other reviews, these boots fit large. I typically wear a 10 to 10.5. I ordered the size 9 in a medium width and there is ample room. I recommend wearing a slightly heavier sock with this boot to enhance comfort. Although the boots were treated by Bean, I plan on treating them with an aftermarket protection/ conditioner to maintain water repellency and leather condition.
