    Product Details

Inspired by the traditional sweaters of Ireland – worn as a defense against the bone-chilling conditions at sea – this sweater is made of premium wool that will keep you warm wherever you are.
    • Traditional Fit: Relaxed through the chest, sleeve and waist.
    • Falls at hip.
    Why We Love It
While imitations are endless, it’s hard to find authentic sweaters like these anywhere else, especially at this price. Competitors use wool-blend yarns, more modern machinery and take other measures that just can’t compensate for the tried-and-true craftsmanship of our heirloom sweaters. Made exclusively for us the old-fashioned way, each sweater is expertly knit in Ireland by family-run businesses who’ve been making them for generations.
    Fabric & Care
    • Premium 100% wool.
    • Handwash and dry flat, or dry clean.
    • Heavyweight wool is warm enough for unusual cold, whether braving the sea or a New England winter.
    Additional Features
    • Time-honored craftsmanship, featuring designs and traditions that go back for generations.
    • Irish villagers traditionally knit distinct patterns or cables into the sweaters for good luck.
    Men's Heritage Sweater, Irish Fisherman's Button-Mock is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 195.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Same wool as yesteryear? I am ambivalent about this sweater. It feels lighter than my more than 10 year old sweater of the same kind. The knit is quite loose. There is an elastic thread that shows on the underside of the cuffs which is pitiful given the price. The wool, while soft, is in the donegal version not a subtle mix and in the gray a rather drab color because it appears faded rather than saturated. I am not sure these as are as good as they used to be. Finally, the buttons are astonishingly enough: plastic! I got this using my numerous coupons and am still debating returning it even with the substantial savings. Best thing about is is that it's made in Europe from European wool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real Irish made........... First and the foremost the price is high BUT SO WORTH IT! This sweater is truly a great well made sweater from Ireland and every detail of this sweater is worth every penny that was spent. This is a very attractive and very warm sweater according to my husband being Irish/American, he lit up like a christmas tree when he put it on for the first time and saw himself in the mirror and said this is a very well made sweater. And then when I saw it on him and after looking at the design and the knit on the sweater, I have to say that this is one of the best purchases I have ever made. Thanks LLB. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Irish sweater This Irish Fisherman's Sweater, with the button-mock, is my second Irish sweater from LL Bean, both, I note, say "made in Ireland" on their label. the first one (a crew neck cable-nit) I wore this weekend while paddling on an Adirondack lake; i bought it at least 12 years ago and have worn it a lot. I expect the same tenure for this new one, which i just took out of the plastic bag. I must say it did smell a bit plastic-y, if that's a word, but i have aired it out and now it is fine--just the smell of real wool. These are great bargains, especially at this price. Great deal, great comfort, and if my first one can be believed, of lasting value.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great looking sweater but unwearable I bought this sweater in the natural color and out of the package it looked great and fit well but had a terrible barnyard odor. I aired it out and ran it in the dryer on "fluff" setting with no improvement. I then contacted customer service who stated the smell was due to chemicals to prevent mildew in transit. They suggested washing it. I hand washed it in cold water and layer flat to dry as directed. The smell was less but still pretty severe (my wife said that she would not be near me if I wore it), also it shrank pretty severely in washing getting shorter going from an XL to a Medium. W liked the sweater and wanted it to work but it was unwearable and was returned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It doesn't get any better This smell thing that is going on here in some of these reviews are not so…this is an aroma, the aroma of 100% wool by it's very own nature, it's the aroma of high quality and money invested not spent. A very warm sweater indeed, @ 6'1" and 204lbs. I ordered an XL and it fits perfectly. Most worthy of wearing out on the first date and right on up to the last one. The only con with this sweater is that you must be prepared to answer lots of questions….ie. where did you get it? how much did it cost? is it warm? The compliments? well, you will have to roll with them because you will surely get them…..It is also by their very own nature that L.L.Bean is all about quality, thank you L.L.Bean.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Wool Sweater Researched a good number of wool sweaters; and quality sweaters such as this - you pay for. While it was a bit pricey, I believe you get what you pay for. In the past, purchasing cheaper sweaters yielded thinner material or not 100% wool and/or poor fit. This is a good sweater, good fit and quite good looking. Gotten a number of compliments already. Others commented regarding a "fragrance?" It's a wool sweater - what do you expect? I grew up on a farm - doesn't really bother that much; not for what your getting. It'll last you a lifetime; and probably your children too when you pass it down.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not quite what I hoped for... Well I looked at this last year but didn't get around to ordering before out of stock for the year. I read all the reviews & had mixed feelings ordering it at the price. once it got here I love the style, I just really wish that it were a significantly denser weave. I picked it up last night & a finger went through. My fist thought was that I had found a hole or missed stitch, but after inspecting I found that my finger had just gone through the weave... I plan to keep it as I said I love the style, but I wish it were a lot tighter weave & that the body was just a tad shorter compared to the sleaves, say 1-2"

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly made and overpriced I purchased this sweater hoping for a life long warm sweater. The name fisherman sweater indicates a garment that might be worn in the environment were cold wet weather would need protection from, well let me tell you it fails on ever account. The knit is so poorly done that you can see through it with huge gaps. When on you can see the shirt bellow. When walking inside the house the air flows through it completely through it. It would never keep you warm outside or in inclement weather. For the price and from LL bean for the terrible quality was unexpected and disappointing Save your money and your time and get a different sweater. It ISN'T a fisherman sweater its only styled that way.
