Since the debut of our first school backpack in 1982, customers have shared their L.L.Bean pack love stories with us – and now we’re sharing them with you.

TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING
When she was eight, Ellie wrote us a letter about how hard it was to wear her pack out. It inspired us so much, we used it in our 2022 ad for school packs!
A REAL CLASS ACT
Martha’s daughter is still using her Original Pack from kindergarten and is getting ready to graduate medical school. “She has carried this backpack all through elementary, middle and high schools, to two colleges, and now for the past four years at UMass Medical School.”
A FAITHFUL COMPANION
Bitzy’s pack was by her side through summer camps, sailing schools and countless miles of travel – and it’s still going strong 23 years later:
“This pack carried lunches made by my dad, love notes, books, pottery from art class, cleats to games, treasures from field trips, and served as a pillow on long bus rides.”
GRIN AND BEAR IT
Caroline told us her husband took her L.L.Bean book pack to a fishing trip in Alaska, where a grizzly bear ran off with it. They watched the bear drag it into the river, jump up and down on it, roll on it and then bring it deeper into the woods. Her husband found the pack later and it was in perfect condition. His beef jerky was gone though!
MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED
Marci’s daughter placed her pack in front of the podium during her high school graduation speech – using it as a metaphor for getting through the many years of school.
“We purchased an LL Bean backpack for her first day of kindergarten, and somewhere along the line, she decided this backpack was going to be with her all the way through graduation.”
