Rated 5 out of 5 by SierraHiker from Perfect for my needs I am a woman & purchased the size S/M in the turquoise color. I walk & hike a lot & like a hat that shades my face & neck & that will stay on in windy conditions. This hat is comfortable. It has a long "duck bill" to shade the face. The neck flap although fairly small protects ears & the nape of the neck. One is able to adjust the tightness of the hat & once that adjustment is made it stays put. I have had no problem so far in keeping the hat on in breezy conditions although have not yet worn it in truly windy conditions. I have washed it once & it held up well. I might also add that it is more flattering than most sun hats I've worn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by FishFlorida from Great Hat for Sun Protection Like this hat a lot!. Very light and covers ears well. Head band goes completely around the hat. Neck and ear curtain folds in should you desire as well as string to snug it up under your chin or connect to a button to keep it from blowing away. Liked it better than a competitors which didn't have a full head band and you could feel adjustment string around your head. I think it great and would recommend to anyone looking for sun protection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Nausiica from Does what it should I offered this to a very long distance walker and he loves it, it stays put, it covers ears, neck and side of head as well as offering a long bill that protects the face well. It also holds really well in the wind, which means free hands to do something else. An important note, however: I thought the back fabric (neck protection) could be stored away in the hat but no, it just hangs there, unless you want to flip it up inside and have a double layer of fabric on your head (and it eventually slides back down. So keep in mind your neck will be protected whether you want to or not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Themutt from Very functional! This may not be the most fashionable hat out there but it sure does a great job keeping the sun off. I used it recently when out on the water and its lightweight material kept my head from sweating too badly and the exceptionally wide brim and rear flap did a fantastic job at keeping my head and neck protected from the sun. When the boat was underway the strap was great as it kept the hat in place and prevented it from flying away. I will keep this hat handy whenever I’m outside!

Rated 4 out of 5 by AlwayssunnyinNM from What I expected I ordered a small-medium, and the fit is great. The quality is what I expect from Beans. The bill is very wide, which I wanted. The bill is also a tad thin so I will be careful not to bend it. The headband is comfortable and adjustable. There also is an adjustable chin strap. The adjuster is a soft foam, perhaps not as durable as a plastic slider. All in all, I like the hat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ileneL from Tropicwear Spoonbill Hat I had to buy this hat because I couldn't fine my go-to LL Bean hat and was going on vacation in a few days. Ordered via phone and picked it up at the flagship store in Freeport. Of course, I found my other hat when I got back from vacation so now I have 2 fabulous styles to choose from. If you need to cover your head, face, ears, and neck from the sun, this is the hat for you. Don't expect beauty. Expect practicality. It's light and doesn't make you sweat in the heat. Stays on in windy weather. Packs away easily. If you want practical over pretty, this hat is for you.

Rated 2 out of 5 by tasteful from goofy looking I ordered this in the blue, which is a lovely color. Once I put it on and looked in the mirror, I burst out laughing. What a hideous hat! I pictured it looking a bit like the ones worn in days of yore by the French Foreign Legion. You know, sort of dashing and sophisticated. I've seen hats of this style that are flattering. Unfortunately, that's not the case with the spoonbill. The flap is oddly shaped and is sewn on too close to the front to look right. If it were pictured on a human being, you could get a better idea. It just looks all wrong.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Bankclimber from Spoonbill cap Spoon bill caps are great. Long ago many outfitters sold them, the mesh panels and oversized bills are very useful outdoors and on the water in hot sunny climates. The recent trend is to include a flap of material that dangles down the sides and back. I'm sure many like this, but I find them annoying. Let your hair grow, wear sunscreen, these flaps give a false sense of security for sun protection. Also, for those of us wearing hearing aids the rubbing of fabric is annoying. Fortunately, a good pair of sewing scissors solved my problem. I felt guilty about wasting the material, but after the cats rejected it as a bandana, I tied it in knots and they love it as a toy. Otherwise, an excellent hat that secures well and provides good shade. Also well suited for photography as it shades normal lenses, if one uses a viewfinder.
