Rated 5 out of 5 by Choppr from great men's adventure sport shorts Since Ex-Officio began messing with their original Amphi short there's been a need for a superior pair of shorts made for someone engaging in adventure sports and kayaking. I came across the Wild River shorts and purchased a trial pair for it's mesh liner which, Ex Officio eliminated when they went to the Neo-Amphi. I'm pleased to report that LL Bean has done a great job filling a niche and have since ordered two additional pairs after receiving the first pair ordered. The short has a full mesh liner negating the need to wear a pair of underwear, quick drain pockets, zipper fly, buttoned waist, belt and made of quick dry material. Thanks LL Bean!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Petaluma from Versatile travel shorts I got these shorts for travel so I can use one pair for running and/or swimming, as well as sleeping on the California Zephyr. When I get to a new city, I like to go for a run and check out the things I need to know about. These shorts have a couple of zippered pockets for security (keys, hotel key), the essential back pockets (for whatever) and a deep front pocket in which I can put a pen, glasses and paper and still run without it bugging me. They would also be fine for hiking. Length, just above knee, is short enough and not too long. I have been looking for one pair of shorts with all these features for, yes friends, years! Glad to have 'em.

Rated 2 out of 5 by brewerywagon from Sloppy fit, will be returning I REALLY wanted to like these. I was looking forward to having a pair of swim trunks that didn’t scream swim trunks, something I could wear with a casual shirt to a restaurant without looking like I came straight from the beach, as well as something that had multiple functional pockets. I’m 5’7”, 150 pounds. I ordered the medium and they fit great at the waist, but sadly, they are way too baggy, and they extend to about the middle of my knees. They look sloppy. The material feels good, I like that they have a functional fly, and (with the exception of the really shallow left front pocket that previous reviewers have mentioned) the pockets are nice. But the cut is really not flattering. They’ll be going back.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Westwoodite from Belt Clasp - El Cheapo! No good! I have been buying from L.L. Bean for about thirty years and I don't think I would ever say that a product they sold was something that cut corners or was a cheap design. In fact, I think this is my first negative review. I have to caution buyers that the clasp on the belt on this pair of shorts is really bad! It is not the type that has a satisfying "click" and locks in place. It is just a plastic rectangle notch that fits into a space in the other buckle. It just doesn't stay together very well. The pants are fine, but the belt buckle is really a poor design. I would not buy another pair like these because of the belt buckle. Hey, L.L. Bean, please don't reduce the quality of your products! Change that belt buckle! Thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by starlifter from Great shorts for all activities. Big deal the left pocket is a little shallow and the belt twists a bit. I just wore these on my vacation to dinner, hiking, swimming and just casual walking around and they are the greatest! They clean easily and dry fast. When the belt is connected there is no twist. And the left pocket has a clip to secure your keys if being active. Also there is a right side zippered safety pocket and a left leg lower zippered pocket which is probably why the slant pocket is not that deep.I am ordering two more pair for color variety and putting all my other shorts in storage. My advice: give em a try.

Rated 2 out of 5 by AMTLRVT from Second Place These shorts are a down version of their predecessor, Tropic Shorts item # 234437, last sold in 2015, which had the same quality quick dry fabric shell and liner but more and deeper pockets with zippers and more color selections. The shallow left front pocket of this new version is not a good place to put anything that can't be secured by the single clip. The only upside; the waist snap is an improvement vs. the sewn on button on the predecessor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ski522 from My Favorite Summer Time Shorts! I love these shorts for summer time when it's hot out and in the winter for my Caribbean vacations! I only have 1 pair but plan on ordering more (wish LL Bean could keep the navy color in stock!) I don't use them as swim trunks, but I do use them when I know I'm going to be near the water such as kayaking. They are comfortable and cool with deep pockets to keep things safe such as my wallet. Also the left pocket includes a hook attachment that I keep my keys on in case I do tip in my kayak! There is also a smaller zipper pocket on the right side in case you just want to carry some cash and couple of license/credit card(s). They don't look like swim trunks so you can pretty much wear them anywhere and not look like a beach bum...although nothing wrong with looking like a beach bum!

Rated 5 out of 5 by RMhiker from Fit well I had ordered and sent back the other Bean supplex shorts because I didn't like the fit, specifically the seam on the butt. Although these river shorts are considerably more expensive, the fit for me is perfect, and I also like the zipper in the crotch since I use these for hiking almost exclusively making it much easier to make a pitstop without having to remove my pack. When you're logging serious miles on the trail, as much comfort as you can get is optimum even it costs more to obtain it. Cheers!
