Rated 5 out of 5 by MoreBeanTheBetter from The last one lasted 7 years! My daughters last LLBEAN backpack got her from 2nd grade up until a freshman in high school. This new one should make it through college. Believe me when I say, she stuffs it full of heavy books and binders, but it takes it. She went with a mint top and we especially like the black bottom. It should keep the bag looking cleaner than her last one looked. *The photo is from 2010. The one on the right is the one we replaced. The one on the left (and, yes, I realize now that it was too big for her) is still being used by my now 7th grader. She intends to finish middle school with it. Naturally beating her sister and keeping it for 9 years. :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by LLparent from Almost great This backpack despite being lightweight, durable, and large enough to haul schoolwork has two major flaws. The side pockets for water bottles are too short and loose. I have tried a variety of thermoses, bottles, padding etc and still everything falls out of the pocket when my son bends down, picks up pack, or turns quickly. Two thermoses have been damaged. Additionally this is a large capacity backpack and should include a chest clip to help secure a heavy backpack and allow for better posture. Please LL bean make improvements to this backpack. The transit backpack seems to have these two improvements just not the same capacity for books and binders.

Rated 1 out of 5 by ArmyColonel from Can't take the Strain As a native Mainah I have supported L.L. Bean for years. Let me begin my review by saying my children have owned several book bags and rucksacks from L.L. Bean that have lasted for years and have only been replaced after being outgrown or become so dirty from tough use that they were no longer "presentable". However after waiting more than three months for this back-logged item to be delivered, the seam along where the straps meet the top of the bag ripped out after only four months of use. This bag cannot handle the weight required of a sixth grader's text books, binders and homework. Perhaps I received a lemon but I cannot recommend this particular product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by pcox104 from Cheaper materials I've used LL Bean backpacks for nearly 20 years. I had friends who were using these bags in 1st grade. I could tell after receiving this backpack in the mail that the materials and craftsmanship were not up to par with my other LL Bean backpacks (or luggage). I grabbed my old LL Bean backpack that I'm currently using, and sure enough, the padding is less all around in the new bag, the straps are thinner, the canvas is thinner, and there is a weird piece of plastic in the back (which, for having a laptop pocket, you'd think you want more padding, not less). Overall, this bag feels like the old bag with a bunch of corners cut. It's worth about $39, not full price at $59.

Rated 5 out of 5 by JanieFromBOS from Reliable and Stuffable I did a lot of shopping before settling on the Super Deluxe LLBean pack. I wanted a large capacity pack for travel - mostly to be able to stuff in my camera gear, papers, and purse and use it as a "personal item" in addition to a carry-on when traveling. I love the compartments and sturdiness. The padding is comfortable. It is heavy though. I knew this, but felt it a bit when traveling in a hot climate this winter. It's a tradeoff. My only real issue is the water bottle pockets - too shallow. For any reasonable sized bottle for travel, it pops out. I wish there were at least three more inches of the netting on the pockets. But other than that, the pack is all they say and I am glad I have it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by hennroo from Very durable! This backpack passes the boy durability test, hands down! My son's middle school did not have lockers, so we needed a BIG book bag and this was the winner. There is plenty of room and compartments in this bag...huge binder, large books, gym clothes (and shoes!), lunch box and school supplies - all in there! And there's a nifty little cushioned zipper bag that he keeps his phone in that keeps it safe and well-hidden. He is now using it for the third year and it is still going strong. I have washed it in the washing machine twice and it comes out great. the only complaint we have is that his water bottle consistently falls out of the pocket on the side...would be great if those were an inch or two deeper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Pumelo from Sturdier than the user My 7th grader needs to carry a lot of books around. Too much, to the extent that he pulled a muscle However, the backpack remains in great shape after 4 months of heavy use. I wish the school would allow roller packs but I guess there is not enough space in the lockers to stow them. My only suggestion is the water bottle pocket is not deep enough to hold a 24 oz bottle. A 16 oz bottle is not enough for him. I know that because of the position of the zippers, the mesh pocket does not have a lot of length for its position, however, LL Bean may consider adding a strap and buckle above the mesh pocket to secure the bottle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Jess1024 from Perfect size I love this bag. I used it when I was backpacking through Europe. I had another suitcase that I left at my main location, but was gone for a week with just this bag and it was amazing. I was able to fit everything I needed in there. It was very comfortable to wear and was great as my carry on luggage. I really liked that it had several different compartments to keep everything organized and a spot to keep my iPad. The material is thinner than I expected, but it was very durable. I was debating between this one and a North Face bag, but ultimately chose this one b/c of size.
