Rated 5 out of 5 by EastBranch from Natural Fabric instead of synthetic. LL Bean has totally under marketed this product. For about the same price as one of their synthetic base layers you can have real silk as a base garment. The mongols wore this very same thing when they invaded Europe as a type of body armor. It has a higher tensile strength than steel and instead of an arrow penetrating it, the silk wraps around the arrow head which lessens penetration and allows the projectile to be pulled out by pulling on the fabric. It does need special washing but this can be done in your bathroom sink than lay out on your bed to dry. Step up marketing department and write a better narrative for this much under rated product. This was the first and true Under Armor!

Rated 4 out of 5 by VatoLoco from Lite-weight warmth First of all, this made-in-China silk turtleneck is super light, so light that you can see your fingers through the fabric. Despite the gossamer-like texture this turtleneck is pretty warm. Obviously it must be worn as a base layer but other garments slide right over it. This weekend I wore my new silk turtleneck during a long, brisk walk and today went for a 100-mile motorcycle ride in weather that hints that winter is upon us. It performed flawlessly. I'm also pleased that it's long enough to be tucked in. And like my favorite performance material -- merino wool -- silk breathes well and doesn't seem to retain odors. I gave this product 4 stars because I'm not sure how it'll hold up in the long run but so far I'm satisfied.

Rated 3 out of 5 by indyducktor from Truly light silk The shirt is thin and translucent so is best as an under layer. Neck is snug but not tight so it offers warmth. Shirt itself is warm as long as there is no wind, but feels quite cold in a breeze. Instructions say can be machine washed, but my shirt has a number of small snags, some probably from machine washing. Shirt does develop snags though, even with careful handling. I wear shirt mainly to have the turtleneck collar without having much warmth or bulk. Soft, smooth feel on skin. Good in some aspects, but comes with the stated caveats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MidAtlanticMomma from Perfect base layer I ordered men's regular - and I'm a petite (5' 1" 100# female) because I wanted this base layer to be longer than what I could get on the Misses style. This base layer is perfect. The sleeves are not hanging thanks to the ribbed cuff. The length is like a long tunic which I prefer. I liked it so much I've ordered a second top. It helps me to keep my home heating bills down since I'm toasty with this base layer. My original silk "thermals" lasted over 20 years! Just remember it is thin silk which is a base layer. Handle gently and it will last years.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Jesmd from Disappointed I loved the turtleneck, but after wearing it once there were numerous runs in the fabric around the neck. Ll Bean customer service was excellent and I exchanged it for a new one. That one did the same thing after washing it once (I had not even worn that one yet). Very disappointed and not up to LL Bean's quality standards. I have other LL Bean silk layers that are years old, some a decade, with heavy use in colder months that look new. I would love to see the granite color in the ladies version. I'll probably try again next year with a new, hopefully better quality batch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by authordale from Turtleneck silks - Much better than Techsilk—I’m 6’2”, weigh in at 240#, and 73 years-old. I love L.L. Bean silks, and I’ll tell you why. I’m a particular sleeper, preferring cool to warm; my problem is that I like to have something covering my shoulders and neck. Viola, the natural silk is perfect, and the turtleneck avoids the plunging neckline inherent with the crew neck. I also use the pants; cool yet wicking the moisture from between the legs. I sleep cool as if naked enjoying the benefits of silk. The only drawback is if you snag a fingernail they “run” like the nylon stockings of old.

Rated 5 out of 5 by SteveMcK from Very Comfortable , I thought this product was excellent . I work outdoors in the construction industry and it works great as a base layer . If something does puncture it it's true if you pull on the fabric it will back right out ! It's lightweight and warmth and doesn't make you sweat " this product is very undermarketed !

Rated 5 out of 5 by oldman6 from warm and light These silk underwear are extremely warm and extremely light. To me, they make the best base layer you can wear. It's so light that you can fit it under any additional layers without any bulk at all. I order these in pairs of 5. I wear them all winter long and when I wear them out, I replace them with new ones. They are very durable and last for years. I even wear them under my dress suits for church.
